How I work

Interim CTO / VP Engineering

Full authority. I take over your tech org, make the hard calls, and leave you with a lean, fast machine.

  • Full authority over engineering, product delivery, and tech strategy.
  • Deep simplification of process, architecture, and org structure.
  • Within 3-6 months we go from chaos to predictable, fast delivery.
  • I leave behind a lean, high-output team that doesn't need heroics or me.
  • Typical duration 3-12 months. My undivided attention until the job is done.

Focused Consulting

Fixed scope, defined outcome. When you need the mess fixed but your existing leadership stays in charge.

  • 1-2 day on-site diagnosis (I look at everything).
  • Concrete 90-day plan with clear priorities and measurable targets.
  • I implement the changes together with your team.
  • Handover + lightweight operating model that sticks.
  • Typical duration 2-6 months. Fixed price, fixed scope, fixed timeline.

My approach

Find the constraint

Every slow org has one thing blocking everything else. I find it fast, usually within the first week.

Cut what doesn't ship

Meetings, approval layers, process debt. If it doesn't help you ship, it goes. I replace your 12-month roadmap with a 6-week planning horizon.

Ship to prove it

Talk is cheap. I still code when it helps unblock the team. You see measurable progress in weeks, not quarters.

I've written about this in detail: CUT: A Decision Protocol for Chaotic Tech Organisations.

How we start

Four steps. No surprises.

  • 1

    30 minute discovery call

We jump on a call. You tell me the symptoms (or the bodies in the closet). I tell you straight whether I can help and how. If it's not a fit, we both save time. No sales pitch, no "let me get back to you".

  • 2

1-2 day on-site (or remote) diagnosis

I look at everything: code, pipelines, boards, org chart, meetings, hiring pipeline, the works.

I talk to engineers, tech leads, product, the founders - everyone.

At the end I hand you a one-page "here's the real problem and the leverage points".

    No 50-slide deck, no fluff.

  • 3

    Fixed-price, fixed-scope proposal - within 48 hours

    You get a short document:

    • Exact outcomes promised.
    • What I will do, what you have to do.
    • How long it will take (usually 3-6 months).
    • Exact price (day rate or fixed - your choice).
    • Start date (usually the Monday after you sign).
  • 4

    We start. Immediately.

First week I'm already in your Slack, in your standups, pairing with people or killing the first sacred cow. You see measurable movement in weeks, not quarters.

When the job is done, I leave you with a lean org that runs without me.

If the thought "we just need to ship faster and stop messing around" has crossed your mind recently, we should talk.

What I don't do

I sell speed, simplicity, and results you can measure in weeks.

Common questions

What does an engagement cost?
Interim CTO engagements are typically billed at a day rate. Focused consulting engagements can be day rate or fixed price. I'll give you exact numbers after the discovery call when I understand the scope.
What if it doesn't work?
I'm direct about fit during our first call. If I don't think I can help, I'll tell you. During engagements, we set clear milestones. If we're not seeing progress, we adjust or stop.
How do you handle resistance from the team?
I earn trust by shipping quick wins and being transparent about why we're making changes. Engineers respond to someone who understands the code, not just the org chart.
What happens when you leave?
Month 1: diagnosis, first cuts to process waste, quick wins that build momentum. By the end: the org runs without me. Predictable delivery, clear ownership, no heroics needed. I leave behind systems and habits, not dependency on me.
